Dr. Bergstrom currently works for DSM Nutritional Products, North America as a Sr. Technical Support Manager for their swine products, which includes vitamins, enzymes, and eubiotics.
Jonathan R. Bergstrom was born in Cedar Falls, Iowa. During his childhood, he enjoyed spending time at his grandparents’ and uncle’s farms near Marcus and Cherokee, Iowa. A natural appreciation for a family history of land stewardship and animal husbandry provided the passion for a life of service in agriculture.
Dr. Bergstrom earned a B.S. in Agricultural Studies/Farm Operations with a Minor in Agronomy from Iowa State University in 1992. After working on a swine farm in Missouri, he applied to graduate school at Kansas State University, where he earned a M.S. in Swine Nutrition in 1996. Since that time, he worked as a Swine Research Coordinator for Seaboard Farms before becoming a Swine Nutritionist/Consultant at Kerber Milling Company for nearly 9 years in Iowa.
Prior to returning to Kansas State University, Dr. Bergstrom also completed a combined total of 13 years active service in the United States Marine Corp Reserves and Army Reserves. From November 2006 until July 2011, Dr. Bergstrom managed the Swine Research Lab at Kansas State University and he completed a Ph.D. in Swine Nutrition and Production. His Ph.D. research included: the association of sow and litter characteristics with piglet birth weight and subsequent growth performance and survivability, the effects of feeder design and management on growing-finishing pig performance, the effects of dietary astaxanthin and Paylean on finishing pig growth and pork color shelf-life, and meta-analyses describing the variables that influence the backfat, belly fat, and jowl fat iodine values of pork carcasses.
